“WITHOUT FISHING NETS” PROJECT

Organizers: NKO Glubina Otvetstvennosti, FGBU Zapovednoye Pribaikalye

Description: Divers, social activists, environmentalists and researchers try to assess the scale of the problem of the pollution of Lake Baikal with polymer fishing nets and engage in clean-up activities to remove the fishing equipment from the lake. Abandoned and lost fishing nets take a toll on the quality of life of the inhabitants of Lake Baikal. They overgrow with microalgae and cyanobacteria thus preventing the unique ecosystem of the lake from the full contact with the environment and continue to “catch” fish and other representatives of the Baikal fauna dooming them to a slow death. Every year the project participants supplement the “Map of abandoned fishing nets”, lift the fishing equipment from the bottom and dispose of it properly.
